The Beeches
The Beeches Care Unit is a purpose built residential unit for adults aged 16 to 65 years who have physical disabilities, often with sensory impairment.
The unit opened in 2006, as a result of many requests to provide long-term care and support for younger people. It was not appropriate to expect the client group to live alongside much older people in a care home who had little in common with them.
The unit is staffed by an experienced support team who have undergone additional training in order to meet the particular needs of disabled people. It has single storey accommodation for ten people in spacious single rooms, all with en suite wet floor shower and toilet facilities. Every room can be fitted with tracking hoist to make transfers easy from bed to chair etc. Doorways are wider than usual and switches are installed at sitting height.

A Home from Home
The unit focusses on providing a relaxed, friendly environment which is as homely as possible.
No uniforms are worn by staff and décor is down to the personal choice of the service users in their own rooms, including bedding. All beds are height adjustable and can support people who need specialist mattresses etc.
Activities are varied and tailored to the preferences of those living in the unit. Outings are enhanced through access to transport suited to wheelchair users. Visiting is open and encouraged. Social events are planned throughout the year, although there is no obligation to attend.
Service users are actively encouraged to become involved in making choices for activities, events, staff recruitment and to provide feedback on how well the service is meeting their needs and expectations. The aim of the staff team is to provide the necessary support to the service user without encroaching on their time and space.
